Step 1

Bake your chosen cake in the Wonder Mould Tin (a 6 egg mixture recommended for a sponge cake) following the instructions given.  Cool, place on the drum board, and mask with buttercream ready for icing.

Step 2

Colour 500g white sugarpaste a very pale shade of soft caramel, and cover the cake, cutting off around the base. Allow to dry.

Step 3

Mix 150g white modelling paste with 150g white sugarpaste, and colour a pale shade of pink.   Take approx 100g of this paste and colour to a deep pink.

Step 4

These Easiest Carnation Cutters are ideal to create quick and easy carnations, but have other uses such as for frills around a cake side, or perfect for the skirt on this dress. Roll the deep pink  paste out thinly, approx 1mm. Using the larger of the two cutters, cut out deep pink frills and follow the easy instructions given.  

Top Tip

When creating frills with these cutters, work down one side and then turn over to work on the other side. This ensures when you fold over, you have two layers looking the same (i.e. the frilled side is on the top).  Frill with either of the frilling tools, the larger one is quicker and easier.

Secondly, instead of folding in half, fold over less than half so that you have two layers of frills with the top frill sitting just above the bottom frill. Use a small paintbrush to shape the frills to give them more movement. Once cut out, leave for 2-3 minutes to dry a little before frilling, you will find the paste easier to manage.

Step 5

Starting at the base of the cake, attach the deep pink frills using edible glue. Complete this layer all around the base.

Colour a second batch of paste to a slightly paler shade of pink, and cut out pieces with the smaller cutter. Repeat and attach to the cake above the first layer. As you progress around the cake, continue to use the paintbrush to lift and coax all the frills into an attractive ‘flounce’.

Step 6

Repeat with the third and fourth layers, lightening the colour as you go. You may finish, if wished, with a top layer of frills coloured in soft caramel, slightly darker than the base colour on the cake. (You will need to colour some extra 50:50 modelling/sugarpaste for this).

Step 7

With a little of the paste left over from the frills, roll out and dress the doll pick (included with the tin!) to your own design. Decorate the top of the skirt with circles of paste, leaving either plain, or using a garrett frill cutter around the edge. Place the doll pick in position, and decorate if wished. Add tiny flowers and some glitter, and make a small carnation as an extra decoration, either in her hair, or on the waist.
