Last week I talked about useful cake markers and how lucky we are to have so many products that make a cake decorator’s life easier!

This week, with Father’s Day rapidly approaching, I started to think about another type of product which has soared in popularity in recent times – the impression / embosser mats! What did we do without them?

Whether they are used to enhance the look of a cake covering, a cake board or a cupcake top, using them certainly gives our cakes more of a WOW factor!

I decided to look at the Manly Set of embossing mats for this year’s Father’s Day cake.  There are six mats included in the pack with designs suitable for men’s cakes! All the mats may be used on either side, giving a raised or a recessed impression.

All you need to do before use, is to spray lightly with a cake release spray, and wipe off the excess with kitchen paper.  This ensures that the mat will not stick to your icing.

Use with sugar paste, marzipan, chocolate, and buttercream that has crusted over. This next pic shows you how they look used with chocolate….

The Tyre Tread mat is obviously brilliant for a car mechanic, tyre fitter or all round car enthusiast’s cake.

The Gears may be used as an embossed background design on a cake or cupcakes, or could be cut out to stand up in a 3D design.

How useful is the Leather mat?  Excellent for a leather tool bag, a Doctor’s bag or a lady’s leather handbag, purse etc. Not to mention all other leather goodies!

It goes without saying that the Woodwork mat is one that could be in use frequently, whether for floorboards, furniture or tree bark!

The other mats, the Diamond Metal and Hawaian are fairly universal, but great general designs for cupcakes and cakes.
