What is a cake drum?
A cake drum is a thicker, stronger type of cake board designed to support heavier cakes or stacked tiers. At approximately 12mm thick (deep) these boards provide extra stability compared to thinner cake cards.
Will this standard cake board support a very heavy fruit cake?
Whist a standard cake board is a strong everyday option, premium cake drums are our strongest type of cake board, so we recommend using those for very heavy cakes.
What size cake board do I need?
A general rule is to use a board 2" larger than the size of a sponge cake, or a board 3" larger than the size of a fruit cake. This will help distribute the weight, as well as enhance the overall presentation of your cake and achieve the best professional finish.
Can I cover this cake board in fondant?
For an alternative decorative finish you can cover this standard cake board in fondant icing to match or contrast the cake design. Some cake decorators also like to add a ribbon around the edge of a cake drum due to it's thicker depth. If you don't like the silver finish, then yes you can incorporate the board into the overall cake decoration using icing or ribbon.
