You Will Need

1x Wright’s Cake Mix (flavour of choice)
12 Hole Muffin Tin (84552)
Culpitt Black Sugarpaste (74218)
‘Baked with Love’ Spider Web Cupcake Cases (2333)
Foam Ball Halves (811402)
Gum Tragacanth (5502)
Cake Star Plain/Fluted Cutters - Set of 6 (84895)
Candy Eyeballs (0650026)
Optional - Various Sugarpaste Colours for Hats/Caps

Step 1

Prepare the cake mix according to the instructions on the pack and fill cupcake cases to ¾ full. This amount should ensure that the cake mixture will peak when baking which will help with the domed shape for these cupcakes. Bake at 180ºC for 20 mins. Remove from oven, and allow to cool.

Step 2

Knead gum tragacanth into black sugar paste (1 tsp per 250g paste). Leave to strengthen for 24hrs.

Step 3

Roll out paste to about 3mm thick. Cut circles of approx. 90mm dia and carefully place, centrally, onto foam halves to shape. Smooth over and neaten around the bottom edge. You may now leave these to dry, or use straightaway.

Step 4

Place onto cupcakes using a little buttercream piped/domed onto the top of each cake to fix the sugarpaste circle. Add eyes and any other facial markings you wish.

Step 5

For the legs, roll out black sugarpaste into a very thin sausage shape approx 3mm dia, cut into lengths of 10cm. 

Top Tip: Use a smoother over the ‘sausage’ to ensure a neat and even finish.

Step 6

Shape legs and leave to dry. Add 8 legs to each cupcake/body by simply pushing into the body. You may if wished, add hats or caps to your spiders to create character. You can even marble sugarpaste colours according to your preference.
